It can result from chewing hard foods or grinding teeth at night and even occurs naturally as you age. It is a common condition and the leading cause of tooth loss.

Causes:

● Stress and anxiety leading to more people, grinding their teeth.
● Chewing or biting hard foods such as nuts and candy.
● A blow to the mouth might happen with an accident, sporting injury, or even fistfight.
● Age factor-Mostly teeth cracks occur in people above 50 years of age.
● Fillings that are so large might weaken the integrity of the tooth.

Symptoms:

  1. Pain on chewing or biting.
  2. Sensitivity to heat or cold.
  3. Pain that is usually coming and goes, but is rarely continuous.
  4. Swelling of gum around the affected tooth.

Treatment:
It depends on the size of the crack, and where it is located, and whether the crack extends to the gum line. Depending on those factors, your dentist recommends some of the following procedures

1)Tooth bonding:
If the crack is too small, your doctor uses a composite resin to fill the crack, to restore its look and function.
2)Crowns:
If the crack only involves the tooth outer structure and not involving the pulp, your dentist will advise the crown to replace the tooth structure. Crown is a prosthetic device usually made of porcelain or ceramic. To fit the crown, your dentist removes some enamel from your teeth to make room for the crown in your mouth
3)Root canal:
If the crack is so deep and it extends into the pulp, your dentist will recommend a Root canal to remove damaged pulp and restore the tooth. This procedure can prevent the tooth from becoming infected. After the root canal treatment, the Crown is placed to replace the tooth structure.
4)Extraction:
If the structure of the tooth and the roots that lie below it are severely fractured and damaged, removing the tooth is the only option.

Self-care and Prevention:
● Avoid chewing hard food.
● Wear a mouth guard if you play a contact sport, and use one while you sleep, if you have the habit of grinding your teeth.
● Brush twice daily and visit your dentist once every six months for preventive care.

What is a mouth ulcer?

These are sores that appear on the inside of your mouth often causing some pain and discomfort. These ulcers are painful in the mouth and gums. They are also known as canker sores.

What are the causes of mouth ulcers?

● Accidental biting of the tongue or inside of the cheek.

● Sharp teeth, ill-fitting dentures, and aggressive brushing.

● Stress and anxiety

● Nutritional and vitamin deficiency

● Genetic factors.

What are the symptoms of mouth ulcers?

These are one or more painful sores that appear on the cheeks, tongue, and roof of the mouth.

How are mouth sores treated?

Mouth sores are non-contagious and heal with time But if sores are large and painful, visit the dentist for immediate relief.

Apply pain relief ointments like oragel and mucopain gel. If the ulcers are caused due to sharp teeth, then coronoplasty should be done to reduce the sharpness of teeth.

If the ulcers are caused due to vitamin deficiency, vitamin supplements should be taken.

How can you get rid of mouth ulcers permanently?

A healthy diet and strict oral hygiene must be followed. Try to reduce stress and anxiety.

Regular brushing and flossing help keep teeth healthy by getting rid of sugars and food particles that team up with bacteria to form plaque.

Certain foods may be good for teeth called functional foods that promote oral health.

Cheese:

  • Eating cheese raised the pH in the mouth and lowered their risk of tooth decay. Please also contains calcium and protein, nutrients that strengthen tooth enamel.

Yogurt:

  • Like cheese, yogurt is high in calcium and protein which gives strength and health to your teeth. The probiotics or beneficial bacteria found in yogurt also benefit your gums because the good bacteria crowd out bacteria that cause cavities.

Leafy greens

  • They are full of vitamins and minerals and low in Calories and promote oral health. They are high in calcium which builds your teeth enamel and also contains folic acid which is useful in treating gum disease in pregnant women.

Apples and carrots

  • They are full of fiber and water. The action of eating apple and carrot produces saliva which rinses away bacteria and food particles. Carrot is a great source of Vitamin A.

Almonds

  • They are a good source of calcium and protein and low in sugar.

Green and black tea

  • Both contain polyphenols that interact with plaque bacteria. They either kill or hold back bacteria. This prevents bacteria from growing or making acid that attacks teeth.

Sugarless chewing gum:

  • This is another great saliva maker that removes food particles from your mouth.

Foods with fluoride:

  • Fluoridated drinking water or any product you make with fluoridated water helps your teeth.
  • Phosphorus foods found in eggs, fish, meat, dairy, nuts, beans are good for strong food.

Intake of cold drinks and alcohol harmful to your teeth:

Soft drinks affect the teeth in two main ways

1.Caries

2.Acid erosion

Soft drinks contain a high amount of sugar. This is fermented by bacteria in the mouth to produce lactic acid as a byproduct and coupled with phosphoric acid already present in freezer drinks, this reduces pH in the mouth which demineralizes tooth enamel and may lead to caries. Repeated intake of drinks leads to an increase in pH in the mouth and color change to brown or yellow.

Alcohol:

Beverages in moderation are perfectly fine but excessive intake of alcohol is harmful to teeth and overall mouth health.

Side effects of moderate drinkers:-

1.Staining:

Beverages have color due to chromogens which later on to tooth enamel that is weakened by the acid in alcohol and stain teeth and they will look odd and especially difficult to have a bright smile.

2.Dry mouth:

Drinks that are high in alcohol content like liquor are drying to the mouth and we know that saliva helps remove plaque and bacteria from teeth which reduce the risk of gum disease and tooth decay. In drinkers drying of mouth leads to tooth decay, gum diseases.

3:Tooth decay:

Alcohol has sugar content which causes tooth decay.

4.Oral Cancer:

Excessive intake of alcohol may also cause oral cancers.

Brushing your teeth is an important part of your dental care routine. Brushing your teeth properly will help prevent conditions such as gingivitis and tooth decay. If you are not brushing right with the soft-bristled brush you might be causing tooth abrasion or even damaging your gums. so follow these steps to brush your teeth the right way.

How to brush

proper brushing takes at least two minutes’ time that’s right. To properly brush your teeth use short, gentle strokes, paying extra attention to the gum line, hard to reach back teeth, and areas around fillings. Concentrate on thoroughly cleaning each section of follows.

  • Brush the outer surfaces of your upper teeth then your lower teeth. Aim the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle towards the gum line.
  • Repeat on the inside surfaces uses a gentle circular motion.
  • Use light back and forth motion on the chewing surfaces.

Some tips for proper brushing

  • We should use a soft-bristled brush which effectively removes plaque and debris from your teeth, without irritating germs or eroding tooth enamel
  • We should change the brush for every three to four months as soon as the bristles start to splay and lose  their shape
  • Use fluoride toothpaste it also strengthens the tooth enamel
  • Before brushing we have to do flossing it removes plaque, bacteria, and food particles that get trapped between the teeth where a brush can’t reach
  • Use a small amount of paste on the brush applying too much toothpaste can cause over sudsing, tempting you to spit and increases the risk of you interesting more paste.
  • Brush your tongue gentles
  • Rinse out your mouth with water and Rinse the brush.
